Sony’s ICDUX80 Digital Voice Recorder combines digital dictation, MP3 recording and playback, and USB storage into a single convenient device. With 2 GB of built-in flash memory, the ICDUX80 can store up to 590 hours of recorded audio in LP mode and up to 36 hours of MP3 music for on-the-go playback. The ICDUX80 uses a high capacity IC chip, which may be recorded over and used again and again with distortion free clarity. A voice operated recording (VOR) feature is included to stop the recording during silent pauses, saving valuable recording time, then begins recording again without missing a single syllable due to the included digital buffer. Other great recording features include digital pitch control and A-B repeat, features that allow recordings to be heard at slower than normal speeds without distortion to facilitate transcribing and editing, or at faster than normal speeds to move quickly to a desired portion. Selectable microphone sensitivity (Hi/Lo) lets you to record different situations, from group meetings to individuals, more effectively. Direct USB connectivity provides a high speed connection to Windows and Mac computers, while drag-and-drop file transfer makes it a breeze to move files between devices without the need for additional software. I am not sure how to rate this player. It did work and sounds good, however, I don’t have anything really to compare it with. The bigest complaint that I have had so far is the way it just eats up batteries. It doesn’t have near the operational time that is claimed. When trying to turn it off it stays on for approximately 10 minutes before going off. I also wish that it would have some type of listing of what’s been recorded like an IPOD does.

2 Stars Not so great
I purchased this unit because I wanted to be able to record class lectures in mp3 format and be able to burn discs to share class notes with others if necessary. I was disappointed with the cheap construction of the unit and the inability to play back recorded segments without a headset. Yes, the recordings can be burned to disc, but you have to go on faith that the recordings have actually been made in the first place. Unfortunately, there is a lot of noise –if you touch the recorder during the recording there is loud noise. When you need to erase a segment, it is a lengthy process to go through the menus that are hard to read to locate the erase function. Also, there is a lengthy period of time that the unit requires to “boot up”–not so with Olympus units.
I guess I will just purchase multiple units of the Olympus VN-4100PC Digital Voice Recorder to be able to store all my lectures. The only problem with these units is their proprietary WMA format that does not allow recording to disc. At least the Olympus units are high quality and easy to operate as well as being good recorders of class lectures. I cannot say the same thing for Sony–they usually produce quality merchandise, but not in this case.

Fine product - works as expected. No distortion when I use it for music. Will be using it for school lectures in the spring.
4 Stars Great Recorder - Needs a microphone
Ordered this recorder for the MAC compatibility. Really light weight, easier to use than most others, long recording time too. The only negative is that the company should include a microphone with it (for the price).
